The Week Junior Summer of Reading 2023

The Summer of Reading is supported by some incredible organisations. Have a read below to find out a bit more about the brilliant work they do.

WHSmith logo

Our friends at WHSmith, one of the nation's leading book retailers, are offering The Week Junior readers 20% off their next children's book purchase in store (T&Cs apply). Some stores will be giving away a free Summer of Reading bookmark to young readers with every purchase. This offer is only available while stocks last, so make sure you get to your local high street store before they run out.

Established in 1792, WHSmith started out as family-run newsagents before becoming the first retail chain in the world. WHSmith's celebrated their 230th anniversary in 2022, and with over 600 stores on the high street and another 600+ stores at airports, train stations, hospitals and motorway services, WHSmith is now one of the UK's leading retail groups and a household name.

National Book Tokens

National Book Tokens want everyone to have access to books if they want them, and they work through sponsorship and partners to get closer to that goal every day. They've been proud sponsors of World Book Day for more than 26 years, giving every child in the country a chance to read – and they also support the work of other literacy charities like Read for Good and Book Aid International.

In case you can’t tell, they are passionate about books and reading, and they know that local bookshops are the best-placed to get books into their local communities, as well as being a crucial component of a thriving local economy. National Book Tokens can only be spent in bookshops, empowering people to spend locally when they’re indulging their love of reading, and making sure those shops – and the book-loving superheroes who work in them – are around for generations of booklovers to come.

Book Trust

BookTrust are the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, with decades of experience in selecting high quality, diverse and inclusive books and designing resources that inspire children and families to read. They want every child to have the best start in life that reading brings. They reach every child in their first year of life and provide support throughout their early years, as children learn to read independently, all the way to secondary school.

They work in partnership with every local authority in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and with a network of professionals in children’s centres, nurseries, schools, libraries and health visiting teams. Some children need them more than others. So, they offer more support to those facing the biggest barriers in life – whether that’s families on lower incomes or looked-after children.

SLA logo

The SLA works towards all schools in the UK having their own (or shared) staffed library to help all children and young people fulfil their potential. They work hard to ensure school staff and children should have access to a wide and varied range of resources and have the support of an expert guide in reading, research, media and information literacy.

They were set up in 1937 to support all those who work in school libraries by a group of Headteachers who recognised the need. They currently have over 2200 members, and are the first port of call for even more people who support school libraries, whether that’s through their training, the publications they publish or their advice line.
